Putting the 'licious' in everything

“Your name is …?”

Posted Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

That’s how a person gets another person’s name. Or they started with a formal proper question – what’s your name?

As for me, I don’t really like to introduce myself using chinese name. Why? Because people couldn’t pronounce my name properly. It’s either HUEY PENG or HUA PING. Some even called by my surname – ah TAN. Sounds like Atan to me. -.-”

Plus, people don’t remember chinese name easily. Unless you’re mei mei, bee bee, ling ling, ting ting or ming ming.

That’s where ’Angeline’ comes in. The name given by my dad when I was 7 or 8.

I can still remember, I decided to get myself a ‘christian’ name that time as I envied those have one in their birth cert. Wanting to be in the same pack, I searched for a new name. I didn’t want to be the plain old Mary, Lily, Lulu. Finally – after searching for few days, I found one – Angel. Angel Tan.

The same day, I went home and told my dad that I’ll be known as Angel for that day onward. But dad said, Angel sounds common. You should take ‘Angeline’.

As not much ‘Angeline’ was heard around that time, I was delighted indeed! I immediately asked my dad how to spell the name cz my English was very bad that time. I was from a chinese kindergarten; who supposed to enter a chinese primary school but ended up at convent after parents heard good remarks about them. Haha.

Because friends from primary and secondary schools used to called ah phing, therefore ‘Angeline’ is not used until when I entered university. Nobody knew me that time – so the way to make people remember me is by using Angeline. Which is easy to them because Angelina Jolie is super popular that time and somehow I was ended up being called ‘Angelina Jolie’ plak.

-.-”"”"

Yes, until now some people still calls me that. Or they’ll be like, Angeline? Ohh.. ‘Angelina Jolie’ ker?

It’s not that I’m uneasy with people calling me that as I know they buat kacau only. Just that I wonder why people wants to associate Angeline with Angelina Jolie. -.-”

Now, I wonder if other ‘Angeline’(s) face the same problem too? Hmm..
